He then went on to complete his residency in pediatrics at Flushing Hospital Medical Center, and his fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition at the University at Buffalo in New York.

Following his training, the doctor attained board certification in pediatrics and pediatric gastroenterology through the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). The mission of the ABP is to advance child health by certifying pediatricians who meet standards of excellence and are committed to continuous learning and improvement.

In order to stay up to date in his field, Dr. Zavoian remains an active member of several professional organizations, including the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, the American Gastroenterology Association, the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Medical Association, and the New York Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. His work has been published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at local and national meetings.

Pediatric gastroenterology developed as a subspecialty of pediatrics and gastroenterology. It is concerned with treating the gastrointestinal tract, liver, and pancreas of children from infancy until age eighteen.
