Neurology deals with the diagnosis and treatment of all categories of conditions and diseases involving the central and peripheral nervous systems, including their coverings, blood vessels, and all effector tissue, such as muscle.

Vascular neurology refers to the diagnosing, treating, and managing conditions of cerebrovascular disease, which are conditions that affect the blood vessels in the brain and spinal cord. Stroke is the most common cerebrovascular disease – hence the “stroke doctor” nickname.

Neurocritical care is a medical field that treats life-threatening diseases of the nervous system and identifies, prevents, and treats secondary brain injury. The doctors who practice this type of medicine are called neurointensivists.
