He then went on to complete consecutive fellowships in vascular surgery at Columbus Hospital, Northwestern University, and at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School.

As a testament to his continued education, the doctor is board-certified in vascular surgery and general surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

On a professional level, he is an active member of various committees, which include the International Society for Vascular Surgery, the International Society for Cardiovascular Surgery/Society for Vascular Surgery, and the Society for Vascular Surgery.

The principal investigator on numerous funded grants, Dr. Silva Jr. is an editorial board member for Vascular, Vascular, and Endovascular Surgery, and Perspectives in Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy. His research has been published in various journals such as Journal of Vascular Surgery, Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, and has authored chapters in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery and Sabiston’s Textbook of Surgery.

General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland.
