The team of rheumatologists at WakeMed Rheumatology offers care for patients with rheumatic diseases including various forms of arthritis. They provide the highest quality and compassionate care to patients dealing with a wide variety of degenerative, rheumatic, and autoimmune conditions. Rheumatology is a branch of medicine devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of autoimmune diseases. Physicians who have undergone formal training in rheumatology are called rheumatologists. Rheumatologists treat various forms of arthritis, autoimmune diseases, and osteoporosis.

“Rheumatology is fascinating due to the fact that it could affect any organs in our body. It allows me to think of a patient as a whole rather than one particular organ. I strongly believe in patient empowerment, where the patient should play an active role in their care and every decision-making process. Hence patient education should be a key aspect of clinical practice. That’s one of the key reasons why I am involved in Doctorpedia” expressed the doctor.

A native of Nepal, Dr. Subedi’s passion for medicine started very early in his undergraduate school when he witnessed the sufferings of one of his close family members who had rheumatoid arthritis. He graduated with his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree from Kathmandu University, and completed his internship at the Kathmandu University Teaching Hospitals.

Upon relocating to the United States, he completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital, an affiliate of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.  During his residency training, he was fortunate to work with a rheumatologist who was not only a great clinician but also a very kind human being. This led to his deep passion for rheumatology.

Subsequently, Dr. Subedi completed his fellowship in rheumatology at the Clinical Center of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Disease, an affiliate of the National Institute of Health, Bethesda. In 2020, he completed his Master of Public Health degree (MPH) at the University of Massachusetts. “Chronic conditions come with many psychosocial issues, which I was able to have a better understanding through this MPH course. ”  says Dr. Subedi.

As a testament to his continued education, the doctor is board-certified in rheumatology and internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards of care in a rapidly changing healthcare environment.

On a more personal note, Dr. Subedi enjoys spending time with his family, managing his lawn, playing soccer,  and volunteering to provide rheumatology education back in Nepal.
