The goal at Urgent Surgery Associates is to provide excellent patient care centered on serious and acute general surgery. While their historical focus has been on trauma care at Baylor University Medical Center, a Level 1 Trauma Center, their expertise in managing acute and unexpected critically ill patients has allowed their practice to evolve to that of “surgical hospitalist” and acute care surgeon. Academically, Dr. Funk completed his undergraduate and medical school education at Texas A&M University.  He completed his residency in general surgery at Baylor University Medical Center in 2009, and his fellowship in trauma & surgical critical care at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in 2010. He is currently pursuing a graduate degree through Southern Methodist University with a focus on adult medical education.

Distinguished as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the doctor is board-certified in general surgery, trauma surgery, and surgical critical care by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

Remaining up to date in his field, Dr. Funk is an active member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the Association of Surgical Education, and the Texas Surgical Society.

Among his other roles, he has been Clerkship Director for Surgery at the Dallas training campus for Texas A&M University College of Medicine since 2011 and holds the rank of Adjunct Associate Professor.

Trauma surgery is a surgical specialty that utilizes both operative and non-operative management to treat traumatic injuries, typically in an acute setting. Trauma surgeons generally complete residency training in general surgery and often fellowship training in trauma or surgical critical care. They are responsible for treating bone fractures, cuts, internal injuries, burns, and shock. They also perform surgery to repair penetrating and blunt-force injuries.
