Specializing in treating injuries to athletes of all skill levels and ages at Charleston Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Centers, Dr. Woolf has particular interests in shoulder and knee problems in active and athletic individuals. His clinical practice includes knee and shoulder injuries, rotator cuff disorders, shoulder instability, throwing shoulder injuries, shoulder arthritis and replacement, knee instability, anterior cruciate ligament injury (ACL), meniscus tears, cartilage injury, and non-arthritic hip pain. 

A leading expert in advanced arthroscopic techniques, one of Dr. Woolf’s interests is instructing residents and other practicing surgeons about arthroscopic techniques. His goal is to identify and treat problems causing pain, loss of motion, and poor function.

With a broad educational background, Dr. Woolf completed his undergraduate degree in Molecular Biology at Princeton University in 1994 and then earned his medical degree from the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine in 1998. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina, then went on to complete a sports medicine fellowship at the Taos Orthopaedic Institute in New Mexico. 

While in New Mexico, Dr. Woolf served as team physician for Highlands University, several high schools in northern New Mexico as well as served as medical consultant to Taos Ski Valley and Angel Fire ski resorts. He then returned to Charleston in 2006 to join the faculty in the Department of Orthopaedics at the Medical University of South Carolina. In 2013, he was appointed Chief of Sports Medicine and Medical Director of the Sport Medicine Program and was promoted to Professor in 2020. He was honored to serve in those roles until January of 2022 before leaving MUSC to join Charleston Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Centers.

Dedicated to surgical excellence, the doctor is board-certified in orthopedic surgery and orthopedic sports medicine by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons.

Over the past two decades including during training and in practice, Dr. Woolf has provided medical coverage and support as consulting physician to athletes ranging from elite/Olympic level to professional/college level to high school and club sports. Over that time, he has worked with organizations including the Charleston Riverdogs (MiLB), Charleston Battery (USL Championship soccer), South Carolina Stingrays (ECHL hockey), Highlands University, Taos Ski Valley, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Volvo Car Open/Credit One Bank Open tennis tournament, as well as numerous high schools, and other sports programs. Dr. Woolf has also served in the medical pool for the United States Ski and Snowboard Team. 

Among his professional affiliations, he is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, and the South Carolina Orthopedic Association. 

A past president of both the South Carolina Orthopedic Association and the Charleston County Medical Society, he currently serves as one of two South Carolina representatives to the AAOS Board of Councilors. He has also served as an Assistant Master Instructor at the AAOS/AANA/AOSSM Orthopaedic Learning Center teaching advanced orthopedics and arthroscopy techniques to the next generation of surgeons.

Orthopedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.
