Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey has won the most awards at this year’s Razzie Awards, winning a massive five out of 10 nominated categories. The film took advantage of the expiring copyright for AA Milne’s classic tale. So it reimagined the characters as vicious serial killers in the movie. Sylvester Stallone’s Expendables also won awards in two categories. Every year,  the day before the Oscars rewards Hollywood’s finest of the year, Razzie name and shame the worst. The organizers describe their awards as the “ugly cousin to the Oscars”. When the Pooh film was released last year, it collected downright awful reviews almost immediately. The Guardian called the film “a terrifying combination of not-scary and not-funny” while awarding it one star. At the same time, Empire said it was “the poorest writing and acting seen in a theatrically-released horror film in living memory”.

As a result, the movie won the worst picture, worst rip-off, worst screenplay, and worst director. Pooh and Piglet who were depicted as the blood-thirsty killers in the film also won the award for worst couple on screen. However, the negative reviews did not discourage the director Rhys Frake-Waterfield from making any further movies in this direction. He also won the award for the worst director and has already announced a sequel to this. Moreover, he also shared his plans of making several other horror films focusing on beloved children’s characters such as Bambi and Peter Pan. According to the US copyright laws, rights to characters can be there for 95 years, and after that, the characters can be legally shared. Taking advantage of this law, the director is performing, sharing, and re-using the beloved character of Winnie the Pooh.

At the beginning of 2024, Walt Disney’s 1928 animated short film Steamboat Willie’s copyright expired. As a result, the trailer for another new slasher film, featuring a masked Mickey Mouse was released on the same day. Another Mickey-inspired horror game, featuring the rodent covered with blood stains was also dropped on the same day.

Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey did manage to escape two of the worst categories which were rightfully given to other deserving candidates. The Worst Actor award went to Oscar winner Jon Voight as he played an Irish mobster in Mercy. The movie follows the plot of a former combat surgeon facing ruthless Irish gangsters holding innocent patients hostage. On the other hand, the Worst Actress award was given to Meghan Fox.
